Warren Jeffs Extradition Hearing

Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune
A Utah judge on Monday, November 15, 2010 ordered polygamous sect leader Warren S. Jeffs extradited to Texas to face bigamy and sexual assault charges there. Jeffs’ attorneys had fought the extradition, arguing that sending Jeffs to Texas would violate his right to a speedy re-trial on accomplice to rape charges in Utah. But 3rd District Judge Terry Christiansen sided with prosecutors who argued once a governor signs an extradition orders, courts can only decide whether the papers are in order.

Here’s what I wrote about it in 2010: Warren Jeffs appeared in 3rd District Court yesterday where his attorneys tried to delay his extradition to Texas where he faces charges of sexual assault and bigamy. The Tribune story is here: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/50664047-78/jeffs-texas-utah-court.html.csp I was the pool photographer in the court, which means that my photos were distributed to various media outlets covering the story. Here are some photos… warren_jeffs_a.jpg Before he came in, a Department of Corrections officer asked the judge to have Jeffs appear in his prison uniform, saying it was against DOC policy to let prisoners change. The judge denied the request. Jeffs appeared in a suit, though he was shackled. warren_jeffs_b.jpg Supporters stood as Jeffs entered. The four in the front row are media. warren_jeffs_c.jpg warren_jeffs_d.jpg At one point Jeffs made a request or asked a question of an officer. From what I could tell the officer turned him down. warren_jeffs_f.jpg warren_jeffs_g.jpg Jeffs seemed more aware of the camera in this hearing than any previous. He looked my way a few times, including this sequence with a slight grin. warren_jeffs_h.jpg This is Warren’s reaction as the judge ordered his extradition to Texas. Really it was no reaction at all, same look as before. warren_jeffs_i.jpg As he was escorted out, Jeffs had a smile and a few words with attorney Walter Bugden.
