Canon is no longer offering repair for my Mark II

Makes me wonder, was it worth the cost? $4k back in 2004. It was great having good equipment for the year and a half it took before the paper upgraded. But… here we are now and it’s a useless prop. Don’t be like me… sell and upgrade before you lose all value.

Repairs stopped last September, which is about when my camera started to skip frames on me, like this:

As I packed gear for that football game, I knew the camera was doing this but I took it anyway. Better to have a freaky camera than no third body with a wide angle lens. This frame of John White IV going animal style after a touchdown proves it:

Republican National Convention – pt 9

I knew my Mark 2 was an old camera, but damn if it isn’t a dirty old man as well. I was photographing this lady…

…when the camera’s autofocus took a detour and tracked back to the other lady’s cleavage…

…before returning to where I wanted it.

Nice try, Smokey. You’re still in timeout.

I had Canon Professional Services check out the camera. They said they replaced the hot shoe.

I’m not sure that’s the only problem.

Cheyenne , Wyoming

Just Hit Cheyenne…

After a few minutes in Wyoming, I spotted my first cowboy. Here is the view right now from my room at The Plains Hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming:

I’m in town for the Wyoming Press Association’s Winter Convention, where I’ll be judging the photo entries, critiquing portfolios, and speaking about my work. Judging with me will be Roberto Rosales, a photojournalist with the Albuquerque Journal. You can find out more about him, and see his amazing work on his Lightstalkers page, by clicking here.

The room is fun, though judging by the decor I will be dreaming of flying saucers tonight:

And the bible on the desk in my room was open to page 719 when I walked in. I glanced down at the open pages and the first scripture I saw was Ecclesiastes 10:1, which as you know reads:

Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

I’ll be thinking about that as I get ready to judge in the morning. Maybe by then I’ll know what it means. Or at least have a guess.
