The East Africa Refugee Goat Project

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune)
The East Africa Refugee Goat Project, located west of the Salt Lake City Airport. During the Spring, when the mama goats are ready to have babies, refugees need help caring for the herd. Many of the refugees have jobs and can’t take time off, so the International Rescue Committee trains dozens of volunteers to be “goat sitters.” They sign up for two hour shifts every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. They stay with the herd and make sure the babies and mamas are okay, putting them in stalls, giving them straw and water — and calling for help if something doesn’t look right. Volunteers Tristan Horne and Sabrina Martinez work a shift, Saturday March 24, 2018.
